Make-a-Bracelet Workshop – MBMAG and SF MAG at Maker Faire 2013

MBMAG and SF MAG at Maker Faire 2013

MBMAG and Metal Arts Guild San Francisco are teaming up for Maker Faire, May 18 & 19, 2013 at the San Mateo County Events Center!  MBMAG will be doing our Make-a-Bracelet workshop and will need volunteers to help teach the public how to make a simple copper stamped bracelet.

MBMAG will be working with our fellow artists SFMAG at the Maker Faire doing a Make-a-Bracelet Workshop. Here’s the link to their page: MAG and MBMAG at Maker Faire – May 18-19. This will be our first joint project with our sister guild! This will also give us more connections with them so when we do a collaborative exhibition with them we will have people who have met each other and worked side by side.

If you think you would like to volunteer for a 4 hour time slot please contact me, Mary Luke.  I will have more specific information as the time draws nearer to the date. We will be setting up on Friday May 17, 2013.

This is a wonderful opportunity to work with our fellow metalsmiths from the north and east bay, expanding our community. Maker Faire has literally thousands of people come through on those two days.   So please let me know if you would like to participate.

Do come out to Maker Faire, whether you are available to volunteer or not.  As they say, “We are all MAKERS”.  The diversity of both Makers and what they make is astounding, there really is something for everyone.

Featured Artist Lynda Watson will give a talk and slide presentation on her recent trip to China.   It was an amazing experience and you will enjoy seeing metal art.

“After a trip to Southeastern China in 2008, Mary Hu was invited by the Chinese government to bring 10 professional metalsmiths/jewelers to China for the purpose of observing, advising, and showing work to students and faculty at Chinese University metals programs.

We were also there to study Maio jewelry and costume in its original, indigenous form and as it was being produced for export as tourist goods. I will show images of the artisans making both fine silver and nickel silver traditional jewelry as well as photos of museum pieces and where the Miao live and work.”  -Lynda

DON’T MISS A SINGLE MOMENT!

Thank you to Kim Solana for graciously making the room available for MBMAG on this auspicious day – Chinese New Year.

Thomas Mann: Details from the Adventure

An artist tracks the path of his career from the early 70’s to the weird world of NOW.

Thomas Mann has been making his living as a fulltime art professional since he graduated from college in 1970. Best known for his “Techno-Romantic” jewelry designs he eschews the role of jeweler, and prefers the description of an artist working in the medium of jewelry. With a degree in technical theatre, set design and lighting, he also invents and builds large public art sculpture and installations. His touring exhibition “STORM CYCLE: An Artist Responds to Hurricane Katrina” is a blend of the many concepts and techniques he employs in his work.

Since the turn of the millennium, Mann and his production company, Thomas Mann Design Inc., and his gallery, Gallery I/O, both based in New Orleans, have survived the negative economic effects of 911, the death of his wife, Hurricane Katrina and now, this bizarre recession. As a result, he found it necessary to increase his creative output, up the number of events to present and sell his work, begin teaching hands-on workshops, start a new business venture, studioFLUX, and in general get busier than he’s ever been before.

Keeping in mind that the Chinese symbol for chaos means danger and opportunity this image driven lecture tracks the progression of events and experiences that place him at the interesting, challenging and scary crossroads of creativity, age, and semi-celebrity.
