Artist Bio and Artist Statement

Create an artist biography and an artist statement and print them (2 pages maximum). Deliver the printed page(s) with your artwork when you deliver it to the exhibit team.

“Reflections” . . . an unhurried consideration of something recalled to the mind.

The title and theme of the upcoming exhibition is “Reflections”. We encouraged artists to create up to 3 new narrative or story-telling works based on the theme of “Reflections”. All submitted art showcases metalwork in a variety of techniques and forms.

We are excited to announce that Pajaro Valley Arts will be hosting the exhibition in person and virtually. Visit the PVArts.org Virtual Tours page to see an example of a virtual show

As part of the exhibition, the Pajaro Valley Arts center gallery will also sell member’s art in their gift shop area. In our previous gallery exhibit and sale, many members had successful gallery gift shop sales.

I’ve signed up, what’s next?

When you know what pieces of art you are entering into the exhibition, fill out both online forms to submit your pieces. Yes, online forms are new this year! The online forms save you work of having to fill out, print, scan, and email because the forms automatically email the exhibition team your submissions. Note that both forms are required.

Links to the form pages are below. The two pages include instructions.

The forms were due 7/2/21 if you wished your images to be considered for inclusion on the postcard. The final due date for all forms from all participating artists was 7/12/21

A Letter from the Exhibition Organizers

The title and theme of our all member exibit is “Reflections” to be interpreted as you wish.

Monterey Bay Metal Arts Guild (MBMAG) has been invited to exhibit at the Pajaro Valley Arts (PVArts) in Watsonville, CA.

Although it is not required, we encourage you to submit narrative or story-telling work.

Reflections
1.  (of a surface or body) throw back (heat, light, or sound) without absorbing it.
2.  Think deeply or carefully about.

Common synonyms of reflect are: cogitate, deliberate, reason, speculate, and think. While all these words mean “to use one’s powers of conception, judgment, or inference,” reflect suggests unhurried consideration of something recalled to the mind.

Some ideas for your conception could be a collection that you have gathered such as feathers, shells, photos, et cetera. It could also be a scene or a place you have visited.

This has been a time of reflection for us all and we would like you to tell the viewer your story. An educational component is required PVArts and to meet this requirement a short story of your concept will accompany the work.

We will accept up to three metal art pieces. Sculpture is encouraged.  Sculpture submissions will require dimensions be provided upon submission so we can accommodate your artwork with pedestals or cases.

Your artwork which is on exhibit must stay until the end of the exhibit, even if it sells during the exhibition. Pajaro Valley Arts will coordinate with the purchaser to receive any sold artwork that is in the exhibition.

As well as exhibiting three pieces you will be able to submit up to 5 metal art pieces for the Pajaro Valley Arts gallery gift shop.  These pieces can be replaced if they sell.

This promises to be an exciting exhibit and at long last, an opportunity to show your work.  Our last all member exhibition and sale at PVArts in 2017 was successful and well received.

Save the Date: Evelyn Markasky Class “Enameling Lab: Sharing an Obsession”

Two cut out figures Evelyn Markasky

We are excited to announce MBMAG’s upcoming workshop: Evelyn Markasky with a 2-day class, Enameling Lab: Sharing an Obsession.

The workshop will be held at Creator Haven in Watsonville and the cost will be $180 plus a $40 kit fee to be paid in class.

Experimenting with different enameling techniques and processes will be the emphasis of this class, having the opportunity to fuse enamel onto copper with both a hand-held torch and the kiln. Alter metal with color and texture using sifted and liquid enamels. Specific techniques include sgraffito, stencils, graphite, foils, how to add images with iron oxide decals, plus some other rather unconventional materials. Whether you are new to enameling or more experienced, you will learn ways to push the limits of your artistic thinking.

Registration will open at 10:00 am on May 18.  We expect this to be a quick sell out, so mark your calendars.

You must be a member of MBMAG to enroll in this workshop. Not a member? Join today!

Alison Antelman Workshop – Feb 3-5 – Registration now open

Alison Antelman workshop

Registration Now Open!
Alison Antelman Workshop
February 3-5, 2017

We are excited to announce Alison Antelman in a 3-day workshop, ‘Engineering Your Way Out”, MBMAG’s first workshop of the year.

Develop your ability to solve jewelry fabrication problems and learn solutions to common design and fabrication challenges. Design and create a hinged bracelet or necklace. Students create a “map” of their project, learn to make irregular shaped bezel settings for unusually shaped stones, add hinges and where to place them for irregular shapes and using stainless steel wire, solder sterling terminations to the steel, add a hook clasp and complete your project.

Students are guided through the process along with discussion, case studies and actual examples of problems as well as their solutions. We will explore the interplay of movement and functionality in jewelry and the approach from the wearer’s point of view (ie: does it sit funny on the neck, is it too heavy, does the pendant flop over). The real benefit to this class is learning how to engineer your jewelry projects as you discover solutions to common design and fabrication challenges. Step--step handouts are supplied along with samples. Basic fabrication and soldering required. Continue reading “Alison Antelman Workshop – Feb 3-5 – Registration now open”

The Monterey Bay Metal Arts Guild present: Made with Love

A showcase of recent work from the studio jewelers, metal artists and sculptors of the Monterey Bay Metal Arts Guild (MBMAG) will be on display the entire month of February, 2015 at the Many Hands Gallery, 510 Bay Ave. Capitola, CA.
Many Hands Gallery specializes in art local artists and is a destination for one-of-a-kind collectibles and gifts.
The opening reception is on February 1, 2015 2-4pm
‘Made with Love’ features work from over 46 talented artists from the entire Monterey Bay Community. These artists express their unique style and let their imaginations come alive in high-karat gold, silver, steel, copper, or brass. Techniques range from traditional gold and silversmithing, forging, casting, and enameling. The main focus of the show is art jewelry but visitors will also find an array of outstanding metal art objects and sculptures.
Made with Love is the perfect opportunity to purchase a locally made piece of Art or Jewelry for your special someone for Valentine’s Day!

The Monterey Bay Metal Arts Guild (MBMAG), which started in the early 1990’s with ten people meeting in each others homes, has evolved into a highly respected entity that provides education, exhibition opportunities, support and community to its more than 100 members. From the Santa Cruz Mountains to Big Sur and beyond, we come together to share techniques and experiences.

The artists of the MBMAG are as varied as the beautiful Monterey Bay area in which we live and work. We are sculptors who make jewelry, jewelers who make sculpture, metal artists who incorporate glass and glass artists who incorporate metal. We work in media that range from high-karat gold to found objects, and the results are highly individual expressions in a great variety of materials, including metal.

The cornerstones of our guild are the excellent metal arts programs at Cabrillo College in Aptos and the Monterey Peninsula College in Monterey. Our keystones are the instructors, Theresa Lovering-Brown, Dawn Nakanishi, Carol Holaday, and Angela Gleason. Along with Cabrillo College professor emeritus Lynda Watson, these artists are our mentors and inspirations.

The work in this exhibit, “Expression in Metal”, represents recent work created MBMAG members. We are honored to be in the Many Hands Gallery to share our craft.

Guild Mission Statement:

Monterey Bay Metal Arts Guild is a non-profit organization dedicated to encouraging an environment of education, networking, and community interaction, as well as support and general camaraderie for artists working in metal.
