Special Guest Speaker Douglas Pryor

Douglas Pryor is a raising and chasing artist located in northern California. He began sculpting in sheet metal in 2005 by creating fully articulated steel suits of armor for full contact sports, which in fact was how he paid for college. Frustrated with the limited detail and relief that shaping stakes could provide, he began to incorporate sculpting with pitch in 2013 and felt like he had found what he had been missing. As he continues to build upon his technical ability, he enjoys making more room for narrative with his work. Each piece is an opportunity to sate curiosity and a chance to build a bridge to others in a meaningful way.

Douglas Pryor Artist Statement

As a method-driven artist, I use my compositions to explore ways to push the limitations of a single piece of material with only human power and hand tools. I take particular delight in pursuing challenging and realistic detail in high-relief metal sculpture. I use my work to explore the nuanced and evolving relationship between humans and the natural world, and the ways that we connect with ourselves and each other.

We hope to see you there!

3 day Intro to Chasing Class: The art of the chisel:

In this 3 day course we’ll be focusing on the fundamentals of chisel technique, hammer control, pitch management, and how to use design to compliment our medium. You will have the option of what your project will be after a short warm up project.

The warm up project allows us to practice with the pitch and all the tooling provided. Afterwards we will have time for a second more challenging project. Depending on skill and comfort level I will have suggestions with more guidance to test the techniques provided in the workshop. For those who feel more comfortable with their own drawing skillset who have their own design/drawing in mind I am happy to help guide you in how we can best bring it to life in the metal. It helps to choose something that will fit in the palm of your hand, something attainable within our time constraints.
This course is short and comprehensive, run at very accommodating speed by experienced hosts. Join us for some creativity and laughs, brighten your world with your own good works.

“Looking Ahead” Exhibition + Sale

THE EXHIBIT WAS EXTENDED TO 1/10/22 AND IS NOW CLOSED

The Call for Artists is now closed for our next all member exhibition which opens on Dec 3, 2021 at the ZFolio Gallery in Monterey California. 25 artists have registered.

You must be logged in with your mbmag.org account to register for the exhibit + sale or join the wait list. Once you are logged in, come back to this page and refresh it to see the registration fields and email address for the wait list.

The title and theme of the upcoming exhibition is “Looking Ahead” and we are encouraging artists to create up to 2 new art jewelry or small sculpture pieces (maximum 2.5″ height). Your submitted art must showcase metalwork in techniques of your choosing. The theme, “Looking Ahead” may be interpreted as you wish.

Artists may submit up to TWO pieces of work.

The materials preferred by the gallery are silver and gold with a minor amount of inclusions of gems, stones or other materials.

All pieces submitted to this show must be for sale and priced with commission to the gallery in mind. (ZFolio Gallery 50%, Artist 50%).

Artists will provide an inventory of their work (using the online Labels and Records form) and will also supply a printed Artist Statement and Artist Biography for the Artist’s Book which is on display at the gallery. The gallery staff uses this book to help inform potential customers about each piece and the associated artist. We are always impressed by how much the gallery staff knows about each piece and each artist. Turn in your printed Statement/Biography sheet(s) when you give your artist to the show organizers or gallery team.

All entrants will receive additional information via email.

ZFolio has an online presence  www.zfolio.com and an instagram presence via @zfolio

Please do not contact the gallery directly unless you are dropping off or picking up your art.

We look forward to working with you,
Toni Danzig and Annette Nemes

Ornament Magazine Features Jeanie Pratt

Jeanie said “I am thrilled with the article about my life and my work, along with the cover and an Artist Showcase!

We in the Monterey Bay Metal Arts Guild are thrilled for member Jeanie Pratt! The cover article features her work, tells about her life and is a great read.

The guild and Jeanie are in the process of picking dates for her to teach “Designs in Metal Weaving” as a guild sponsored workshop in early 2022.

Cover photo: MBMAG member Carol Holaday

You can see more of Jeanie’s original intricately and expertly crafted art in her member gallery here on the guild website and on her own website JeaniePratt.net where you can also find a link to her gallery representation or contact her directly.

In the spring of 2021, Jeanie’s work was featured in a one-woman exhibit at Mobilia Gallery

Many of the photos of Jeanie’s work were photographed locally with the expert eye of member Carol Holaday. Visit Carol’s member gallery to see photographs of her metal art.

Visit our Workshops page to check for dates for Jeanie’s upcoming workshop, or sign up for the mailing list to be one of the first to register for the workshop. Guild members are offered seats in the workshop before the dates are announced to the public. Anyone anywhere in the world can join now.

Artist Bio and Artist Statement

Create an artist biography and an artist statement and print them (2 pages maximum). Deliver the printed page(s) with your artwork when you deliver it to the exhibit team.

“Reflections” . . . an unhurried consideration of something recalled to the mind.

The title and theme of the upcoming exhibition is “Reflections”. We encouraged artists to create up to 3 new narrative or story-telling works based on the theme of “Reflections”. All submitted art showcases metalwork in a variety of techniques and forms.

We are excited to announce that Pajaro Valley Arts will be hosting the exhibition in person and virtually. Visit the PVArts.org Virtual Tours page to see an example of a virtual show

As part of the exhibition, the Pajaro Valley Arts center gallery will also sell member’s art in their gift shop area. In our previous gallery exhibit and sale, many members had successful gallery gift shop sales.

I’ve signed up, what’s next?

When you know what pieces of art you are entering into the exhibition, fill out both online forms to submit your pieces. Yes, online forms are new this year! The online forms save you work of having to fill out, print, scan, and email because the forms automatically email the exhibition team your submissions. Note that both forms are required.

Links to the form pages are below. The two pages include instructions, examples of the Labels and Records Form as a downloadable / viewable PDF, and a PDF version of the PVA Loan Agreement for you to view before you fill out that form online.

The forms are due by 7/2/21 if you wish your images to be considered for inclusion on the postcard. The final due date for all forms from all participating artists is 7/12/21

Artwork for Sale PVA staff will assist customers to the gallery using the information we supply during the artwork submission process. The gallery requires the following ratio of pieces that are For Sale and Not For Sale (NFS): If you enter 1 piece, it must be for sale. If you enter 2 pieces, at least one of those pieces must be for sale. If you enter 3 pieces, at least 2 pieces must be for sale and the third can be NFS.

Membership in PVA is optional, but encouraged. See: pvarts.org to join
For items that sell in the “gift shop” area of the gallery, PVA will take 30% if you are a member of PVA or 45% if you are a PVA non-member. Work should be priced accordingly.

Exhibition Plus Sale: The gift area was very successful the last time MBMAG had an exhibition and sale at Pajaro Valley Arts. Show participants may put up to 5 pieces total in the gallery gift shop area. Work must be priced at $200.00 or less. As items are sold you may replace them.
